Change in the Real Horse World

Lasting change in horsemanship doesn’t begin with the horse — it begins with us.

For generations, equestrians have been taught to control horses through dominance, fear, and force. While these methods may appear to work in the short term, they create stress, erode trust, and increase the risk of dangerous behaviours. Science confirms what many owners already sense: fear-based control does not create safety — it creates fragility.

Trust-based approaches, in contrast, are proven to build cooperation and reliability. Horses that feel safe and understood are less likely to spook, resist, or shut down. A partnership rooted in connection isn’t just kinder — it is measurably safer for both horse and human.

This doesn’t mean “spoiling” the horse or letting them become idle. Quite the opposite. A horse who feels heard and respected becomes an autonomous partner — one who understands their role, enjoys their work, and steps into it willingly. Whatever discipline or purpose you pursue, horse listening opens the door to a horse who chooses to show up, not one who is forced to comply.

Through Dolly Communication, I help owners reframe their role from enforcer to partner. Change in the real horse world comes when we stop asking, “How do I control my horse?” and start asking, “How do I help my horse feel safe and engaged?”

About the Expert

I’m a CMA Certified coach and the author of Myths of the Horse World and Regaining Your Power on the Yard.

I founded Dolly Communication to help horse owners and riders replace control-based methods with trust-driven partnerships.

Through creating free resources, developing the Knowledge Hub, and building The Dolly Way™ practitioner network, I work to foster a wider community of welfare-first horsemanship.

My goal is to challenge outdated practices and promote safer, science-backed approaches that benefit both horses and humans.
